Bancs: Ce descripteur ne s’applique qu’au brouillard (FG) et indique que des bancs de brouillard couvrent l’aérodrome ça et là. Alors que la visibilité horizontale indiquée dans le message METAR ou SPECI est de 1000 mètres ou plus, l’observateur signale ainsi des bancs de brouillard réduisant par endroit la visibilité apparente à moins de 1 000 mètres.

Ce descripteur ne s’applique qu’au brouillard (FG), à la bruine (DZ) ou à la pluie (RA), lorsque la température des gouttelettes est inférieure à 0 °C (eau surfondue). Au contact du sol ou d’un aéronef, les gouttes d’eau surfondue forment un mélange d’eau et de verglas. Le brouillard givrant peut déposer du givre. Mince: Ce descripteur ne s’applique qu’au brouillard (FG), lorsque la visibilité horizontale observée est de 1 000 mètres
ou plus, mais que, entre le sol et 2 mètres au-dessus du sol (le niveau de l’oeil de l’observateur, par convention) se trouve une couche de brouillard réduisant la visibilité apparente à moins de 1000 mètres. Pour l’exploitation, MIFG peut correspondre à des conditions dans lesquelles les feux et marques de pistes seront cachés.
